Paula M. Vilarinho
Paula M. Vilarinho is Professor of Materials Engineering at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal, Director of the Master Course on Additive Manufacturing of the University of Aveiro and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of the European Materials Societies (FEMs).
She is a ceramics
engineer and materials science expert, who is known for her contributions to
the Electroceramics area (materials for electronics and microelectronics), through
the understanding of the physico-chemistry of non linear dielectrics and lead
free ferroics and to their development. And more recently for the the
development of the Seeded Photosensitive Precursor Method (Vilarinho &
Calzada) for the low temperature fabrication of ferroelectric oxides on
flexible substrates and Electric Field Driven Assembly Platforms Involving
Ferroics for Biodevices. She is the author of over 330 manuscripts, 10 book
chapters and 10 patent applications (national and international) and editor of
5 books. Vilarinho has been recognized for her accomplishments with the prize
“Estímulo à Excelência” (Stimulus to Excellence), 2007 awarded by the
Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her profile and
scientific career were recently distinguished in the book “Successful Women
Ceramic and Glass Scientists and Engineers: 100 Inspirational Profiles” by
Lynnette Madsen, Willey, 2016.
Vilarinho served as President of the Portuguese Society of Materials (SPM), from 2013 to
2019. She was vice-president of the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM), from
2009 to 2013. She was a former President of the Portuguese Society of
Microscopy (2010 to 2011). She was Coordinator (Portugal) of the Emerging Technologies
Program within The University of Texas at Austin (USA) – Foundation for Science
and Technology (FCT) Portugal Program (Collaboratory for Emerging Technologies,
CoLab), from 2013 to 2017. In addition, and within her university duties she
was coordinator of the Scientific Commission of the Department of Ceramics and
Glass Engineering (former Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering) of
the University of Aveiro, from 2002 to 2006. Vilarinho served also as the
Director of the Undergraduate Course in Ceramics and Glass Engineering of the
University of Aveiro, from 1999 to 2001, and Director of the Undergraduate
Course in Materials Engineering of the University of Aveiro, from 2009 to 2016.
Vilarinho is Fellow
of the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM), Portuguese Ceramics and Glass
Society (SPCV), European Ceramic Society (ECerS), American Ceramic Society
(ACerS) and Materials Research Society (MRS, USA). She has served on the
Editorial Advisory Boards of Scientific Reports (from Nature Publishing Group),
Processing and Application of Ceramics
and Materials (MDPI). She has served as
referee in the selection of Portuguese and European R&D projects (European
Research Council and various European States Research Agencies) and National
Science Foundation (NSF) USA, as well as a frequent referee of various SCI
journals.
Vilarinho has an
extended international collaboration, that includes long standing activities
with the University of Sheffield, UK, Brown University, USA and CSIC, Madrid,
Spain (to name some). She was Visiting Professor at the Department of Materials
Science and Engineering of North Carolina State University, USA, in 2001,
Visiting Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering,
University of Sheffield, United Kingdom in 2008 and Visiting Professor at
McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin,
Austin, Texas, USA, in 2015.
Vilarinho holds a B.S. degree in Ceramics and Glass Engineering from the
University of Aveiro (1983) and a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and
Engineering also from the University of Aveiro (1994).
